Deen Relief operates several long-term campaigns which includes the Bangladesh Housing Aid project. This aims to provide the most vulnerable members of society in Sylhet, Bangladesh with one of life’s most basic needs – a secure home. In a country which is known for its extreme floods and storms, it is important that these homes can withstand adverse weather conditions.
Back in early 2019, Deen Relief was made aware of 8-year-old Juber, an orphan child who had already lost his father, Mahmood Ali. Juber, an only child, was left with his mother, Khaleka, to take care of him. She was not in any stable employment and got by mainly through begging. At the time, both mother and son were living in abject poverty in their village in a run-down dwelling which was not fit for habitation. They were in desperate need of shelter.
With the generous help of our supporters, Deen Relief successfully raised £2,250 to build them a new home. Alhamdulillah, with that money, we managed to build Juber and his mother a 2-bedroom house in their village of Dowlotpur, Sylhet. It was constructed using bricks together with a tin roof supported by a metal frame. This project was completed within the month of Ramadan, 2019, itself an amazing achievement, Alhamdulillah. Mother and son were able move in soon after.
At Deen Relief, we often keep in touch with those who have benefitted from our work and check back with them from time to time. It was with great sadness that we learnt that Juber’s mother, Khaleka, passed away last year in Ramadan 2020. She had been suffering from kidney problems. Due to extreme poverty, she was unable to access basic medication. In addition, it is most likely that being unable to afford regular basic food also contributed to her untimely death. This is the sad reality that many of the poorest people in Bangladesh face every day. Unfortunately, it is not an uncommon thing.
Having lost not one, but both parents, Juber was left without any immediate family of his own. Right now, there is clearly a desperate need to help this orphan child secure his future with a decent education. He is currently being taken care of by his maternal uncle who now lives in the house and has the responsibility of cooking and looking after him. However, there is no certainty how long this situation will continue. In any case, at Deen Relief, our aim is to give Juber hope for a bright future and to help him find a permanent way out of the poverty cycle, insha’Allah.

We are currently working to raise the funds to sponsor Juber– to provide for his education and food.  If you would like to know how you can help, please get in touch with Deen Relief today.  Your contribution, however big or small, will make all the difference for one little boy’s life.
